Code of conduct
As a community of Iyengar yoga instructors and dedicated yoga practitioners we strive to promote the teachings of BKS Iyengar. by offering yoga classes to anyone regardless of age, ability, gender, gender orientation, race or income.
We have a strong commitment to ensure that teachers and teacher trainees offer a safe and secure environment. Bullying, harassment or any form of violence will not be tolerated. Our association is a member of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada (IYAC) and we adhere to their code of ethics.
Should anyone feel uncomfortable or have an ethical complaint regarding a teacher, trainee or member, the first point of conduct is to reach out to IYAC’s ethics advisor.
Teachers code of conduct
The teachers’ code of conduct is based on the yamas and niyamas of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali at the request of BKS Iyengar. This code of conduct specifies that
- Teachers of Iyengar yoga have a professional ethic that must be adhered to.
- Teachers have a responsibility towards their students, and
- Iyengar yoga teachers and students also have a personal responsibility
A list of all these in detail can be found on IYAC’s website.
Integrity
In addition to maintaining the integrity of our yoga practice and professional development, it is important to maintain ethical business practice. Care, consideration and clear communication are key to working alongside each other. New members to the community should familiarize themselves with existing studios and teachers. Yoga studios should be a reasonable distance from other studios to minimize competition. When possible, Iyengar Yoga workshops should not overlap with other scheduled workshops. Our community can only grow stronger with collaboration and positive intention.
