Valerie began yoga practice in her teens when, after seeing a young woman standing in tree pose (Vrksasana) in the school gym, she was intrigued by what that person was doing and sought to discover what it might be. Soon after that sighting she was shown a copy of the book Light on Yoga by BKS Iyengar. Both events led to a long-lasting curiosity and interest. She enthusiastically began formal study of Iyengar yoga with Wende Davis and Claudia MacDonald (1995). She now travels regularly to learn directly from the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India (most recently in January 2015). She has trained under the guidance of Gioia Irwin, Ingelise Nherlan and Louie Ettling, as well as with many other senior-level Iyengar yoga teachers. Valerie has been profoundly influenced by study with Faeq Biria, with whom she continues intensive Iyengar yoga courses. Her teaching is as well informed by her training as an RN in Vancouver, by two decades as a freelance graphic designer of books in the publishing industry of Canada, and by a long meditation practice. She encourages each student to steadily find balance, intelligent movement and maturity through yoga practice. Her classes are direct, engaging, and enjoyable. Valerie is the founder of Studio-be (formerly, yogawest3rdavenue), an independent, private venue in the Kitsilano/Point Grey area of Vancouver, where she has taught weekly classes and workshops since 1998. Most recently, she has begun teaching yoga classes at the South Hall of Galiano Island, where she currently lives and gardens under the watch of huge firs and ravens.
